Day 1 – St Malo to Vitré

Friday 13th May – Ride Day 1:

Big Cogs hero France en Velo

A super first day on the St Malo-Nice ride took us 80 miles to Vitre in glorious weather.

Having left Kirkburton yesterday morning (Thursday 12th May), devastatingly we said goodbye to Tim Bennett in London who returned home following the sad news of the loss of his sister Rachel.

Eight of us then continued to Portsmouth where we met the van and took the overnight ferry.

Today’s ride took us along the coast, skirting St Michaels Mount before heading south on lovely surfaced and quiet roads, meandering through Bretagne villages.

We didn’t find a lunch stop today (eat off the van) as it’s so quiet but as this is the shortest mileage day and relatively flat we afforded ourselves a couple of leisurely coffee stops in Ponterson and Fougere … and then a beer on arrival in Vitre – a  lovely town complete with castle (heading out for dinner soon!).

All went well today with no bike issues (other than Rob’s gears which Clarky trimmed) and super support from Miles & Jonathan in the van.

Fingers crossed that’s the trend for the next 10 days !
